How to Survive Long-Haul Flights

Updated: Dec 11, 2022

For many travelers, flying is a part of the adventure, but for others air travel can be the exact opposite; where the thought of being stuck in such an enclosed space for long periods of time is in no way comfortable or exciting. Below I have a few tips on how to keep yourself calm, comfortable, and entertained while on a long-haul flight.

1. Stay Hydrated

The air circulating throughout the plane is very dry, so it's important to keep yourself well hydrated. Typically there are multiple times where drink service is provided during long-haul flights, but be sure to bring your own as well. A perfect item to bring along with you is a collapsible, reusable water bottle that you can refill before your flight or during a layover if you're not keen on spending $5 on a bottle of water.

2. Keep Yourself Occupied

There are a multitude of ways to keep yourself distracted throughout the duration of your flight; it'll feel as if you reached your destination in no time at all! These days, most if not all long-haul flights give you the option to choose from tons of movies, TV shows, music and even games while on board! You can also be sure to download shows and movies from apps like Netflix or download offline versions of games you like to play. Other options to include physical or ebooks, podcasts, and your favorite snacks.

3. Bring a Sheet Mask

As I mentioned before, plane air is super drying for the skin, so after a long-haul flight yours may be in need of some moisture. I like to bring a hydrating sheet mask with me and aim to put them on a few hours into the flight. This helps to keep my skin moisturized and supple despite the circumstances.

4. Get Comfy

We all know that as the years pass, airlines have been trying to squeeze more and more people onto their planes. This means less legroom and little to no arm space while seated next to other passengers (unless you're seated in Premium Economy, Business Class or First Class). Generally, flying can be very uncomfortable, so it's best to do whatever possible to be as comfortable as possible. Traveling in loose clothing that can be layered is what I like to do so that I'm both comfortable and warm, since airplanes tend to get chilly. Layering is great because it also allows me to remove items when I start to feel warm. Jogger sets, active wear, or any loose clothing will do you well. I also advise you to bring your own blanket and neck pillow for comfortable sleeping while on your flight. Most tend to over you both, but the quality usually isn't up to par unless you're in business or first class.

5. Drown Out the Noise

Whether its the two loud best friends catching up on life right in front of you, or the screaming infant two aisles down, noise-cancelling headphones are perfect to drown out any unwanted noises during your flight.

6. Keep Necessities Close By

When taking long-haul flights, it's important to keep anything that you may need in close proximity, in either your carry-on or a personal item (purse, book bag, etc). Any toiletries, medications, and change of close should be kept close to your person for easy access when needed. It's also just smart to have at least one full change of clothes in your personal item or carryon in case your checked luggage is ever delayed or lost.

7. Wear Compression Socks

Sitting still on a plane for several hours is no good for the circulation in your lower body, especially your legs. There is also the risk of developing a serious condition called DVT, or Deep Vein Thrombosis, which is essentially a blood clot in the lower body. Wearing compression socks on your flight is a great way to reduce the risk of this occurring! It's also a great idea to try and move about the cabin every 2-3 hours to stretch and help with circulation in your legs.

8. If you're Anxious, try CBD

I know plenty of people who get anxious while on flights, and this includes myself, despite being on a flight at least once a month. CBD is a great supplement to take that will help with keeping you calm and relaxed throughout the duration of your flight. Be sure to read up on the different types, and the legalities of CBD products wherever you plan to travel in advance. 9. Get Some Sleep

Another great option to get you through a long flight is to get some shut eye! I make sure to do this if I'll be reaching my final destination in the morning or afternoon; this way I'll be ready to take on the rest of the day with ease and avoid jet lag as much as possible. Taking melatonin supplements can be a lot of help if you're trying to sleep at a time your body is unaccustomed to, and to get more comfortable I suggest using an eye mask, blanket, and neck pillow.
