5 Apps You Should Download for Your Trip to Iceland

These are my top 5 picks for the best apps to download on your phone for your future Iceland trip. For my picks on the best travel apps in general, you can read my blog post Top 9 Apps to Use During Travel.

1. SafeTravel Iceland

This app and website is essential for your time in Iceland because it will keep you updated on critical travel conditions and safety depending on your location and your final destination. My group and I checked this daily and were aware of any unsafe weather and/or road conditions (our 2nd day there we were warned of Hurricane-force winds and decided not to travel that day) so that we could make itinerary changes as necessary.

2. Vedur.is

This is another super important app (website) to have at your disposal while in Iceland, especially since Icelandic weather can be pretty volatile and change quickly. Although there is no 100% accurate way to determine the weather where you'll be, this is the most accurate for the island. My advice is to wear waterproof layers as much as possible so you're prepared for anything.

3. AllTrails

For my hikers, this is probably an app that you already utilize, but it's a great way to see what trails are accessible to you in your area. This is the perfect app to have while adventuring in Iceland; it'll help you discover beautiful, new things while keeping both you and the environment safe.

4. My Aurora Forecast

A great app to help you increase your chances of catching the beautiful Northern Lights! It lets you know the areas and likelihood of seeing the aurora, provides details about the solar winds and has high-resolution sun imagery. You're likely to get more lucky in areas with less light pollution, and typically during the months of late September-March. You'll likely come across them when you least expect it, and if you have an iPhone, you can catch great pictures of The Lights using 'night mode' on your camera.

5. Parka

To take away some of the stress of parking while in Reykjavik or other parts of the island, the Parka app is available for you to find available parking and pay for it in an easy and secure way. You can also use the app to reserve a campsite or order a taxi!

Happy Wandering!
