3 Authentic Mexican Restaurants to Try in Cabo San Lucas

Updated: May 27, 2023

Of course, there's plenty of good food to choose from in beautiful Los Cabos, but it's definitely apparent that much of the area caters to tourists' taste buds. Luckily, on my trip there in January I was able to try a few authentic Mexican restaurants in the area and let's just say...any Mexican food I've had since while back in the States pales in comparison to the deliciousness I got to indulge in.

Tacos Ramiro.s

On the hunt for a decent meal while on our way to our Airbnb, we came across this quaint and unsuspecting taco spot near Medano Beach, in a neighborhood that is frequented mostly by locals. You can either take a seat at a barstool at the front of the restaurant or make your way to the larger tables on the inside of the building. From what I can remember, we weren't given any menus; the waitress just made us aware of the available meats to choose from (all in Spanish) ranging from carne asada to beef head (cabeza). You're also given a large plate with dividers that is filled with a variety of toppings and sauces to place in your tacos. The carne asada and chorizo tacos paired with their salsa verde were so so good (and spicy!)

Birrieria Paisas

Y'all... I could've eaten here daily and been completely satisfied. I'm not lying! Birria is actually a dish that originates from Jalisco and is essentially a meat stew or soup traditionally made with goat or mutton. More recently, the meal has become social-media famous using beef, in either taco or quesadilla form with the birria as a dipping sauce. This was my first time actually trying any form of birria, and I'm so glad this was my introduction to the dish. It was so flavorful, warm and delicious. The ambiance of this spot is another thing that I loved; its typically packed and you can tell it's well-loved by everyone in the area. Be sure to brush up on your Spanish as you won't be addressed in English, but don't worry, all of the staff are super friendly and willing to help you with whatever you need. A definite 10/10 experience for me and my group!

El Pescador

If you're looking for fresh seafood away from the hustle and bustle of the marina, look no further than El Pescador. It's quaint and relaxed, even offering great deals on their lobster or fish combo platters. It's only a few blocks over from the the middle of downtown Cabo San Lucas, and about a 5-7 minute walk from the Marina, which is great if you don't want to venture out too far. The food here was fresh, tasty and filling (the plate is actually really big), and their traditional margarita may have put a few hairs on my chest. I enjoyed it all and highly recommend if you want to steer clear of the tourist traps and want more of an authentic meal.

Honorable Mention: Keep a look out for street carts selling churros (and be sure to get the ones filled with crema) they're so tasty! I can't remember the name of the exact cart we went to, or if it even had one, but it was about two blocks from the Marina, near Tacos Ramiro.s.

Happy Wandering!
